Spirulina maxima: the source of phycocyanin
Spirulina is a freshwater microalgae from the cyanobacteria family, considered a nutrient-dense superfood and known for centuries as a particularly rich natural source of nutrients and micronutrients. Xelliss uses Spirulina maxima, a special strain known for its higher protein and phycocyanin content than other well-known varieties such as Spirulina platensis.
At the heart of Spirulina: Phycocyanin
The freshwater microalgae Spirulina thrives in harsh conditions and produces a range of potent antioxidants to protect itself. One of these compounds is phycocyanin, a bright blue protein that plays a vital role in photosynthesis and serves as a potent antioxidant in cellular structure. Our PhycoSci X14® harnesses the power of Spirulina maxima, a naturally phycocyanin-rich strain with 20–30% higher phycocyanin content (17–18% compared to 14% in S. platensis). Xelliss's unique, water-based, solvent-free extraction process maximizes the concentration of phycocyanin in PhycoSci X14®, providing a potent, high-quality source of this valuable phytonutrient to boost the immune system and protect the body from oxidative stress.

Phycocyanin has been studied worldwide for over 40 years. PhycoSci X14® leverages this research with a high concentration of phycocyanin, known for its antioxidant properties in the plant.
Photobioreactor cultivation
Our spirulina is grown in closed photobioreactors, producing a pure and contamination-free product rich in phycocyanin. This controlled system has a small carbon footprint and effectively utilizes natural resources.
EPNA extraction
We use a unique natural process called EPNA (Extraction of Phyco Native Active) to extract phycocyanin from freshly cultivated A3 spirulina. This water-based and solvent-free process preserves the quality of the phycocyanin:
• The extraction takes place on site, immediately after harvest
• Heat or drying is avoided so that the microalgae remain intact
• Fresh mountain water, purified by reverse osmosis.

Ingredients: Aqueous extract of spirulina (Spirulina maxima), stabilizer (glycerin of plant origin).
